Dressed in clothing typical of the period, the Mayoress looked resplendent in a lace trimmed dress with full skirt layered, parasol, and hat trimmed with feathers while the Mayor sported pin striped trousers and dark jacket, a gold brocade waistcoat, striped cravat and top hat. The Mayor and Mayoress themselves will be wearing period costume, and this week took a stroll around Founders Heritage Park in full Victorian costume ( pictured (2.6MB JPG)) in advance of the game which takes place on 20 September. Mayor Aldo Miccio said “The teams from Nelson College and Nelson Rugby Club will be dressed in replica uniforms from 1870, so we thought it would add to the atmosphere of the event if we encouraged everyone to dress up.” Even the food on offer has a nod to Victorian times – hot pies, toasted nuts, a spit roast and Devonshire teas. Entertainment from the band rotunda will include a brass band and barbershop chorus. The Victorian theme is woven throughout the Re-enactment event which will include period displays, horse-drawn carriages, Morris Dancers and Penny Farthing races. Prizes will be awarded to the most authentic male and female costumes, best couple, best hat and best facial hair. By getting into the spirit of the event, anyone dressed in Victorian period costume has the chance to win a High Tea at Warwick House, a limited edition replica leather rugby ball featuring the crests of the two competing teams, a selection of locally brewed beers or tickets to the Nelson Arts Festival.
